In recognition of World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) urges New Yorkers to understand HIV prevention, learn their health status through testing, and seek treatment options. As the State’s largest provider of HIV primary care, HHC hospitals and health centers have tested more than 1.3 million people since 2005 when the public hospital system began making HIV testing part of routine medical care for patients by offering tests in emergency rooms, in-patient units, and outpatient clinics. There are treatment services available throughout the five boroughs.
“World AIDS Day is a reminder to New Yorkers about the importance of taking control of your health, whether it’s getting an HIV test or making sure you take preventive health measures,” said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. “The combination of early diagnoses and improved treatment options gives those living with HIV a better chance of managing their illness.”
HHC’s 11 acute care hospitals are Designated AIDS Centers, and HHC hospitals and community health centers offer specialized HIV care to all New Yorkers, regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. Services include:
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation’s 30 year leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS was recognized in 2011 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for achieving a major milestone: one million unique New Yorkers tested for HIV.
