NYC Health + Hospitals Announces Application Period for 2021 - 2022 Clinical Leadership Fellowship

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the open application period for the 2021-2022 Clinical Leadership Fellowship, a one-year opportunity designed for post-residency graduates interested in administrative roles within the nation’s largest public hospital system. Fellows are assigned to teams within the public health system’s offices of quality, population health, ambulatory care, or medical and professional affairs to acquire hands-on, practical work experience, supplemented with participation in leadership meetings and developing and leading a substantial project within these teams. In addition to their primary administrative responsibilities, fellows also provide clinical care outside their fellowship activities, ensuring they can provide care to some of the City’s most vulnerable patients. The 2019-2020 class of fellows, the program’s inaugural class, had the opportunity to play critical roles in the public health system’s COVID-19 response, among other programs. The application deadline for the fellowship is Friday, October 30, 2020.

Last year’s class made incredible contributions across our system and across NYC during the COVID pandemic,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care Ted Long, MD, MHS. “One of the special things about this fellowship is that it is a two-way street, where we’ve been able to provide valuable leadership experience to them but we’ve also learned from their fearlessness and innovation on ways to further tackle some of our health system’s most daunting challenges.”

During the 2021-2022 program year, fellows will be placed in the NYC Health + Hospitals’ Office of Quality and Safety, Ambulatory Care, which includes the division of Population Health, or Medical and Professional Affairs. Throughout their fellowship, successful applicants will receive direct mentorship from leaders within these areas, interested participants may also inquire about opportunities to apply to be a facility-based Clinical Leadership Fellow, in which they would conduct their administrative and clinical time at a NYC Health + Hospitals acute or community-based facility.
The curriculum will include fundamentals of leadership and administration, population health approaches to improving outcomes, team facilitation and change management, fundamentals of quality improvement and science of quality measurement, developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives, and designing safe systems and building a “just” culture. As part of their participation, fellows will be required to design and lead a quality improvement or population health-oriented project at their sponsoring facility.
The 2020 – 2021 class of fellows began their fellowship on July 13, 2020. The fellowship class includes the following participants:
- Dr. Ayrenne Adams, assigned to the Office of Ambulatory Care, division of Population Health, and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur
- Dr. Jennifer Drouet, assigned to the Office of Quality & Safety and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln
- Dr. Sara Guevara, assigned to the Office of Ambulatory Care and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Cumberland
- Dr. Lara Musser, assigned to the Office of Quality & Safety and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem
- Dr. Rashi Bamzai, assigned to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull for her administrative time and clinical practice.
- Dr. Risa Bouchner, assigned to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings for her administrative time and clinical practice.
- Dr. PJ Rosenstock, assigned to the Office of Medical & Professional Affairs and conducting his clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue
- Dr. Emilie O’Neill, assigned to the Office of Ambulatory Care and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/East New York
- Dr. Gina Siddiqui, assigned to the Office of Population Health and conducting her clinical practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst
The 2019 – 2020 class of fellows played critical roles in NYC Health + Hospitals’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including standing-up the 311 clinician-led COVID-19 hotline that provided a mechanism for any New Yorker to contact a provider directly during the pandemic to assess mild symptoms, avoiding unnecessary trips to the ED. Over 90,000 New Yorkers used this hotline during the COVID-19 peak in the City. In addition to helping to stand-up the COVID-19 clinician-led hotline, this inaugural class of fellows also supported leadership in planning and building-up alternative care sites during the pandemic peak, while also synthesizing and disseminating the latest research on this unprecedented global health crisis. Fellows also played roles during NYC Health + Hospitals’ roll-out of NYC Care, the health care access program for New Yorkers who cannot afford or are not eligible for health insurance.

Physicians who have completed or are on track to graduate from an ACGME-accredited residency program prior to July 1, 2021 can apply. The application deadline is October 30, 2020. Applications will be reviewed and interviews conducted on a rolling basis.
