NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that Bellevue CEO William Hicks and Metropolitan Hospital CEO Cristina Contreras have both been named to City & State’s “2021 Manhattan Power 100” list. This year, the publication is recognizing leaders’ contribution amidst the pandemic and their commitment to helping New Yorkers find a path forward. Hicks and Contreras ranked 54th for leading the major public hospitals that have helped Manhattan address the COVID-19 pandemic. City & State’s “2021 Manhattan Power 100” program honors public officials, business executives, community leaders, and others who are contributing to the borough’s recovery from the pandemic.
“Congratulations to Cristina and Bill for this well-deserved recognition,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “Cristina and Bill’s dedication and passion sang true during the hard months of the pandemic, where they were leading hospitals in some of the worst circumstances imaginable in healthcare. Cristina Contreras has broad experience in the health care management of inpatient, ambulatory, clinical and ancillary services. She started her career with NYC Health + Hospitals in 1995 as a caseworker, and has successfully progressed through various leadership positions throughout the public hospital system. She served as Executive Director of NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx before being named Chief Executive Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan in April 2021. She also serves as Chair of the National Dominican Day Parade.
William (Bill) Hicks currently serves as CEO at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, recognized as the oldest public hospital in America and established in 1736. Bellevue is the flagship hospital for NYC Health + Hospitals. Mr. Hicks has more than 40 years of healthcare experience, and has led facility operational responses to major disasters and emergencies such as Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene, 9/11, Ebola, and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic response. As part of a career commitment to public health, Mr. Hicks actively works to promote access equity, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of care.
Former CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, Eboné Carrington, was also named to City & State’s “Manhattan Power 100” list.
