NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Helen Arteaga-Landaverde and Chief Financial Officer David Guzman have been named to Crain’s “2021 Notable Hispanic Leaders and Executives” list. Both leaders were recognized for their successes in steering NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst through the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as ongoing efforts to provide care to underserved communities. Jessica Arocho, Director of Community Affairs at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull was also recognized for her community organizing.

“I am extremely honored to have received this recognition,” said Arteaga-Landaverde. “I regard it as a great privilege to serve my community through my role at NYC Health + Hospitals, a public health system that provides excellent care to everyone, regardless of their background, immigration status, or ability to afford treatment. I look forward to continuing to expand Elmhurst’s reach into the community and to increasing access to healthcare for all those who need it. I also want to salute my colleague and fellow honoree David Guzman for his steady stewardship of our finances throughout the COVID-19 crisis. He is truly one of our healthcare heroes.”

“I would like to express how honored I am to have received this recognition,” said Guzman. “Having spent the formative years of my career working at NYC Health + Hospitals, and having been born at one of its facilities, I feel a special connection to the organization, the patients, the communities that we serve, and my friends and colleagues whom I am privileged to serve with. I also want to congratulate Helen Arteaga-Landaverde, who since the moment she transitioned to the CEO role at Elmhurst, has been a steadfast leader, working hard to reach and capture the hearts and minds of our loyal and amazing staff as she continues to guide our hospital through the pandemic.”

Arteaga-Landaverde, who previously served as an Assistant Vice President at Urban Health Plan, was appointed CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, a 545-bed Level 1 Trauma and Academic Medical Center, in January of 2021. In addition to overseeing the hospital’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts and securing over $27 million in capital funding for facility upgrades, she has also focused on improving the hospital’s ties with the surrounding neighborhoods through collaborative partnerships with community-based organizations and educational institutions.

David Guzman has twenty years of healthcare finance experience at NYC Health + Hospitals. In his role as CFO at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst he has spearheaded efforts to increase hospital revenue while containing costs. He has also managed the facility’s finances and efforts to secure funding for sufficient PPE, medical equipment, and other vital supplies as the hospital continues to care for an underserved community placed under enormous stress by COVID-19.

“I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Helen Arteaga-Landaverde. This recognition of her tireless work is the perfect moment to extend my gratitude for her partnership and commitment to provide care for our neighbors in Queens,” said State Senator Jessica Ramos.

“Helen Arteaga-Landaverde is a quintessential Queensite, growing up in Corona,” said State Senator Toby-Ann Stavisky. “She still lives there and serves the healthcare needs of all who come to Elmhurst Hospital. When we talk about the heroic healthcare workers, we think of Helen and her colleagues who serve a large and diverse Hispanic constituency.”

“Great to see Elmhurst’s very own Helen Arteaga-Landaverde and David Guzman recognized in Crain’s Notable Hispanic Leaders. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored how important it is to ensure that our communities hardest hit have the health care they deserve, regardless of status. I am proud and honored to work with Elmhurst Hospital heroes and leaders like David and my Ecuadorian sister Helen who has been an integral part of our community. Congratulations to both,” said Council Member Francisco Moya.
