Dr. Matthews K. Hurley was nominated for this honor posthumously. He died Dec. 9, 2016, after more than a 30-year affiliation with NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem. At the time of his death, he was working part-time in the Emergency Department and in the Ronald H. Brown Ambulatory Care Pavilion.

Dr. Hurley began his internship and residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem after graduating from the New York University School of Medicine. His colleagues and co-workers praise their former colleague for his humility, generosity, compassion and emphasis on patient care. Dr. Hurley also had been medical director of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem’s Smoking Cessation Program. He was an assistant professor of Clinical Medicine, Columbia University-School of Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Hurley would visit Harvard Medical School to learn the latest research in Emergency and Internal Medicine.

The Brooklyn native was, at the time of his death, First Vice President and Executive Director of the Doctors’ Council, SEIU, and Chairman of its Patient Care Program. His scholarship included contributing articles to the New England Journal of Medicine.
