Michael Schuster, MD

Dr. Michael Schuster has been Director of Infectious Disease at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter since the 1990s.

For more than 30 years, he has been a respected mentor in the treatment of HIV/AIDs patients, from his first days at Goldwater. Dr. Schuster, joined Goldwater in 1986 and established a 120-bed unit there for patients struck by this mysterious disease. He oversaw treating these patients with retro-viral drugs.

Dr. Schuster is revered by his colleagues for his abundant knowledge, experience and availability. He is serving his second stint as the President of Medical Staff, and in the past distinguished himself in leading the P&T Committee, teaching medical students from Weill-Cornell, and writing valuable Clinical Guidelines to help clinicians manage complex infectious diseases. He also leads the facility’s Antibiotic Stewardship program in addition to other responsibilities.

A graduate of SUNY-Downstate Medical Center, Dr. Schuster was an intern at Staten Island Hospital, and served his residency there where he rose to chief resident. He also was a Fellow in Infectious Diseases at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Schuster has co-written several papers on HIV/AIDS-related conditions. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the New York Society for Infectious Diseases.
