Allocated funds will support renovation of intensive care units, operating rooms, and other infrastructure projects

May 20, 2021

Elmhurst, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst today announced it has received $5.5 million in funding from Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. in FY22 Capital Funding. The funding will support the renovation of the hospital’s intensive care units and operating suites, while additional support from state and city elected officials is expected to support other infrastructure projects within the facility.

“NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst proved to be a backbone of the Queens borough during the horrible COVID-19 pandemic, and the infrastructure improvements supported by this generous allocation will make our community hospital bigger and stronger,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “On behalf of our Elmhurst community, we thank Queens Borough President Richards and his colleagues for their continued support and advocacy that helps us deliver the high-quality, state-of-the-art care residents of this great borough deserve.”

“We are extremely grateful to Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and to our other elected officials for their commitment to funding vital capital projects at our hospital,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst CEO Helen Arteaga Landaverde, MPH. “As we work to treat a community still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, their support is more crucial than ever. We look forward to partnering with our elected leadership to heal from the trauma of the past year, and provide the high-quality healthcare services our patients need.”

“Today, we are announcing a truly historic investment in both the health of our borough and the healthcare heroes at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, who have shown indescribable bravery throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “This major investment will fund a number of projects at Elmhurst, which will expand access to critical care for thousands of families.  By allocating this funding, we are thanking our healthcare heroes not just with our words but also with our actions.”

“I want to thank Borough President Richards’ allocation of millions of dollars for NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst,” said Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. This funding will help Elmhurst create a new state of the art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, so children in need of intensive medical care can be treated locally. It will also expand two operating rooms so Elmhurst’s team of extraordinary surgeons can treat more patients, more efficiently. These are significant improvements to an outstanding medical facility.”

“The pandemic has highlighted our community’s deficiencies in access to healthcare. NYC health + Hospitals is a lifeline for so many who cannot otherwise afford to go to the doctor, yet budget cuts continue to put a strain on our already-limited resources. I want to thank Borough President Richards for his leadership, and for prioritizing funding for our district’s most critical support system so that our neighbors can continue to keep themselves and their families healthy,” said Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz.

“This is a much-needed and important victory for NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. This hospital provides services to one of the highest immigrant population in New York City and was one of the leading hospitals in the impacts of COVID-19. This funding ensures preparedness, quality of services, materials, and resources for many years to come. NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst took care of us, now it is time for us to care of them,” said NYC Council Member Daniel Dromm.

“The New York State Nurses Association thanks Borough President Donovan Richards for his five and a half million dollar investment in NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. As front-line nurses we know the importance of funding our public health infrastructure in order to allow care-givers the tools they need to deliver high-quality health care to all New Yorkers with compassion, dignity, and respect.  The eleven NYC Health + Hospitals facilities anchor the entirety of our City’s healthcare system by ensuring that everyone receives the care they need and deserve, which is why continued investment in Elmhurst Hospital is so vital,” said Judith Cutchin, RN, New York State Nurses Association Board of Directors and President of NYSNA’s NYC Health + Hospitals/Mayoral Executive Council.

“Doctors Council SEIU knows, as a union representing doctors throughout the NYC Health + Hospitals system, including at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, that investment in our public hospital system is needed now more than ever.  We appreciate and thank the leadership of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards for knowing the value of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and investing in the Peds ICU and Operating Room.  Today’s announcement by Borough President Richards will help Elmhurst continue to play the vital role it does in delivering quality health care to all.  As doctors that matters to us and our patients,” said Frank Proscia, M.D., President, Doctors Council SEIU.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst is New York’s second oldest municipal hospital and one of the first hospitals in the borough of Queens, and serves over 1.3 million people.
