Communication Disorders

The Division of Communication Disorders at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island has developed programs to identify, evaluate, and provide therapy to people (infants, children, adolescents, adults, and adult geriatrics) with a wide variety of communication disorders and dysphagia (an oral food management and swallowing disorder). We strive to maximize all aspects of human communication, hearing, and eating and provide ongoing patient family education/home programs to maximize function, understanding, adjustment, and carryover.

Our speech language pathologists are licensed by the NY State education department and certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). They provide complete audiology assessments as well as speech language therapy for the following problems:

  • Speech delay (articulation)
  • Language delay
  • Fluency/stuttering
  • Voice/dysphonia (vocal cord problems, such as hoarseness)
  • Electronic larynx training
  • Aphasia/stroke (loss of ability to speak or understand language)
  • Dysarthria/stroke (slurred speech)
  • Neurological disorders
  • Dysphagia/developmental (difficulty swallowing)
  • CVA (Cerebrovascular accident), impaired blood flow to the brain, stroke

We accept most insurance plans as well as self-paying patients. Some insurance plans may require a prior approval and a referral from a physician. Please feel free to call with any questions. We will provide any needed assistance and/or referral information.
