Dental GPR PGY-1 Application Information

All applicants must possess a DDS or DMD degree from an ADA approved U.S. Dental School, must be NYS licensure eligible, and must be a legal resident of the United States. Application deadline is December 15th of the year prior to program admission. Applications must be submitted through Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS), which is a centralized application service sponsored by the American Dental Education Association. Accepted candidates are required to begin the GPR Program on July 1st of the Program year. The Match (Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program) is used to place applicants into positions in our program. Dental GPR Residency Program PGY-1 Goals and Objectives

The focus of the residency program is to train outstanding general dentists. Residents provide comprehensive care to all patients and are exposed to the entire spectrum of dentistry including: restorative and cosmetic dentistry, implant dentistry, oral surgery, fixed and removable prosthetics, interceptive orthodontics with fixed and removable appliances, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and endodontics. Residents will gain experience treating a diverse patient population

• Develop confidence, efficiency and technical knowledge in dentistry
• Learn in hospital, community and dental practice settings
• Learn dental business and practice building skills including OSHA standards, scheduling, marketing, insurance, record keeping, financial arrangements, and legal issues
• Recognize and diagnose oral diseases based on patient complaints, diagnostic data, laboratory data, and consultations with other health professionals
• Assessment, treatment, alternative and prevention strategies
• Diagnose patients with complex needs
• Master the integration of multiple dental disciplines
• Develop treatment plans for patients with special needs and create modifications to plan as needed
• Rotary endodontics
• Removable and fixed prosthodontics including implant restorations
• Techniques to enhance patient’s facial esthetics
• Treat minor occlusal abnormalities and arch space problems with space maintainers and other orthodontic appliances
• Perform procedures and behavior management on pediatric patients
• Provide dental care as part of an inter-professional health care team
• Operating room and in-office general anesthesia and sedation techniques
• Make referrals to and obtain consultations from professional colleagues for treatment of dental, medical, psychological and social problems presented by dental patients
• Obtain and interpret clinical and other diagnostic data from dental professionals and other health care providers
• Use clinical, medical and pathology laboratories
• Anticipate and prevent medical emergencies that may occur during treatment, trauma and emergencies
• Perform physical examinations and assess traumatic injuries
• Provide care and management of patients with infections, extra-oral and complex oral-facial emergencies
