NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island today announced plans to rebuild and expand outpatient and preventive health services for the South Brooklyn community, thanks to more than $17 million in capital funding from Mayor de Blasio, the City Council, and Brooklyn Borough President. The funds will support the modernization of wellness and outpatient primary care clinics to improve the health of New Yorkers with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other common health conditions. The renovated ambulatory care space is part of the future NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health campus modernization featuring the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospital opening in 2022.

The $17 million capital investments will fund the renovation of 26,000-square-feet of ambulatory care space, including more than 50 exam rooms for primary care services, and an upgraded ambulatory radiology suite. Mayor de Blasio is allocating $15.5 million of the funding, which was secured through the strong advocacy of NYC Council Member Mark Treyger on behalf of the hospital. The remaining $1.7 million was provided by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams at $500,000, and NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson at $1.2 million.
“We are extremely grateful to the Mayor, Council Member Mark Treyger, Speaker Corey Johnson, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams for securing capital funding on our behalf, which will allow us to provide new opportunities for the South Brooklyn community to access high-quality, primary and specialty care in state-of-the-art facilities,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA. “NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island aims to deliver comprehensive and patient-centered ambulatory care services to the residents of South Brooklyn and beyond. As health care continues to shift from inpatient to outpatient care, with a focus on prevention and chronic disease management – we want to ensure we’re here to provide these critical services.”
“The generous capital funding support by the Mayor, Council Member Mark Treyger, Speaker Corey Johnson, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is going to transform how we provide care to the South Brooklyn community. This community is diverse and rich with culture, but most of all, it is resilient. It flourished in the face of adversity after Hurricane Sandy, and it has been battling the COVID-19 pandemic. At Coney Island hospital we are as diverse and as resilient as our community and we want to grow with them to meet their health care needs for generations to come. This state-of-the-art ambulatory care facility will allow us to meet the needs of our community” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Department of Ambulatory Care Chairperson Michelle Soto, MD.
“The Radiology Department looks forward to working with our ambulatory care partners to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art diagnostic and interventional support at Coney Island hospital. New equipment and a renovated radiology suite will enable us to provide fast, reliable diagnostic scanning in an outpatient setting so that patients can be treated and return to their healthy lives in this vibrant city. Radiology is integral to a neighborhood-centric model that reaches patients fast and keeps them out of the hospital. We’re excited to be part of the revitalization of healthcare in South Brooklyn and neighboring communities” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Department of Radiology Chairperson Carlos Forcade, MD.
“NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island’s investment in expanding ambulatory care services is an important milestone in meeting the health care needs of the residents of South Brooklyn and its neighboring communities. I applaud Mayor De Blasio, Speaker Corey Johnson, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, and Council Member Mark Treyger for their continued commitment to protecting New York City’s public health system” said Theresa Scavo, Chair of the NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Community Advisory Board.
Work on these spaces is expected to begin once the current emergency department in the hospital’s main building moves to the new inpatient hospital in summer 2022.
On August 5, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island announced a milestone in its transformation with the renaming of its hospital campus. The facility will be renamed as NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health, and its new 11-story hospital building and the existing Tower building within the renovated campus will be jointly named after United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The new names will be effective in the summer of 2022, when the new building opens.
“Our community has been one of the hardest-hit during the pandemic. In order to address our growing health care needs, Southern Brooklyn residents deserve a top-notch healthcare system that will provide world-class medical care. Securing $17 million in capital investment for NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island was a top budget priority for me, and I’m proud that we will be able to expand primary ambulatory care services and add a radiology suite at the hospital. I appreciate the bold vision of NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya, her team and our dedicated health care workers. I thank Mayor de Blasio for prioritizing funding for this initiative. As a member of Council’s Budget and Negotiation Team, I was able to deliver this major victory for the community,” said Council Member Mark Treyger.
“NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island is a lifeline for residents of the surrounding area, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It deserves state-of-the-art facilities to continue expanding the health care services it offers to the community. As a strong advocate for preventive healthcare, especially with diet-related illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, I am encouraged by the fact that the expansion will provide for more exam rooms dedicated to these conditions and other chronic illnesses. I was proud to allocate $500,000 in capital funding for this project, a key component of the hospital’s broader expansion and revitalization, and thank Council Member Treyger and Speaker Johnson for their leadership on this initiative,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
“It’s more important than ever that New Yorkers get quality health care services they need. I want to thank Council Member Treyger for his strong advocacy. I am proud to have worked alongside him to secure the $1.2 million capital funding for upgrading the ambulatory care services in South Brooklyn Community,” said Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
“I’m happy to see NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island receive this much-needed capital funding, enabling the hospital to direct additional resources toward developing expansive, upgraded ambulatory care facilities and services,” said Chair of the Committee on Hospitals Council Member Carlina Rivera. “Thank you to my colleague Council Member Mark Treyger for his tireless advocacy, as well as Speaker Corey Johnson and Borough President Eric Adams for their support in fighting for the resources the South Brooklyn community needs and deserves.”
“Two weeks ago, I joined my colleagues in celebrating the exciting future of this hospital – and now, thanks to this generous infusion of capital funding, Coney Island hospital can achieve its important goal of meeting the health care needs of people in my district and all of southern Brooklyn,” said Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz. “We owe a debt of thanks to Borough President Eric Adams and Councilman Mark Treyger, and of course Mayor de Blasio, who have worked tirelessly and passionately to safeguard the health and well-being of our communities.”
A 2019 community needs assessment showed that patients were coming to NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island for routine well and preventative care, hypertension, diabetes mellitus complications, among other chronic health care needs. With the renovation of space in the current hospital building, more patients will be able to address all their non-emergent and diagnostic imaging health care needs on the campus.
Between 2018 and 2020, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island had over 718,000 ambulatory care visits. During that same period, the hospital saw over 72,000 outpatient diagnostic radiology visits.
