NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island today announced it has received $2.6 million in FY21 capital funding for a state-of-the-art robotic surgical system thanks to the support of NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and the advocacy of Councilmember Mark Treyger, Co-Chair of the Brooklyn Delegation. The addition of the robotic system, which is designed to further advance the technology used in minimally invasive surgery, builds on the hospital’s greater strategic vison of enhancing its surgical, inpatient and ambulatory care departments to further improved patient experience. The surgical system can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive procedures and has been optimized for a large number of surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, colorectal and general surgery.
“NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island aims to deliver the state-of-the-art clinical care to the residents of South Brooklyn and beyond,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya. “The ability to provide robotic surgery will transform our patients’ experience with improved surgical outcomes, quicker patient recovery, and fewer complications. I thank Speaker Corey Johnson and Councilmember Mark Treyger for their commitment to the city’s public hospital system and our patients in Brooklyn.”
“This expansion of our robotic program demonstrates our commitment to provide surgeons and patients with cutting-edge technology that allows us to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control so that patients are able to recover sooner and with less pain after an operation,” said Chair of Surgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Muthukumar Muthusamy, MD.
“We are very excited to be able to offer minimally invasive robotic surgery to our patients right here in South Brooklyn,” said Chief of Urology at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island Abdo Kabarriti, MD. “The ability to offer robotic surgery is a game changer for our patients who stand to benefit from this state-of-the-art technology, through smaller incisions, a decrease in blood loss and transfusions, less postoperative pain, smaller scars, and a quicker recovery to normal activities.”
The capital funding will be allocated specifically to acquire the Da Vinci surgery robotic assisted surgery system that will allow surgeons to experience a wider range and complete control during laparoscopic surgeries, transforming hand movements into smaller, more precise movements. Additional features of the equipment provide surgeons with a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient, while reducing blood loss and recovery time, as well as keeping incisions and scars minimal.
“Patients at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island deserve the best care possible to ensure safety and peace of mind during procedures. As we are still in the middle of a public health crisis, this Council stood by our commitment to the health and well-being of New Yorkers, allocating funding for this equipment even in a tough budget season. I thank Council Member Treyger for his fierce advocacy on behalf of Brooklynites, and I am especially thankful to the hardworking staff at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island for their care and devotion to ailing New Yorkers,” said Speaker Corey Johnson.
“The latest significant capital investment I secured for state-of-the-art robotic surgical equipment for NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island will expand on the critical services they provide every patient that they serve, and builds upon a greater vision for the hospital and our community. Additionally, hospital leadership strongly believes this investment will help attract and keep top medical talent for the hospital to provide excellent quality care for Southern Brooklyn residents. I commend the NYC Health + Hospitals staff on their dedication to improving health outcomes for their patients throughout Southern Brooklyn, and I will continue to support our safety net of public hospitals and ensure they have the resources they need,” said Council Member Mark Treyger (Bensonhurst, Coney Island, Gravesend, Sea Gate).
“Now more than ever, we must make the necessary investments to support our hospitals ability to deliver top-notch care. I am proud NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island has received this critical capital funding in order to further its mission to continue improving patient experiences across the board,” said Council Member Carlina Rivera, Chair of the Committee on Hospitals. “Thank you to my colleagues Speaker Corey Johnson and Council Member Mark Treyger for prioritizing the enhancement of the hospital’s strategic vision. This new equipment can be used for minimally invasive procedures across a broad spectrum of practices, and will enhance NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island’s surgical, inpatient and ambulatory care departments.”
The robotic technique will apply to a number of surgical specialties. Among general surgery, urological and gynecological surgery, NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island estimates that the new equipment will be applied in approximately 300 surgeries in the first year alone.
