NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur today announced that it received a 5/5 rating from U.S. News & World Report and was named one of the country’s “Best Nursing Homes.” Criteria for designation looks at patient care and safety, health inspections, and facility staffing levels. U.S. News evaluated more than 15,000 long-term care facilities nationwide, in every state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas. This year, 2,969 nursing homes earned the designation of a U.S. News’ “Best Nursing Home.” This is the second consecutive year the facility has received the recognition. NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur offers long-term care and support for people who can no longer manage their physical, emotional, or mental health at home. The facility is located next door to NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, making it convenient for long-term care residents to receive many health care services on-site, including internal medicine, ophthalmology, gynecology, podiatry, imaging, and dentistry. The recognition builds on the City’s public health system’s transformation efforts.
“This recognition is well-deserved and isn’t possible without the tireless work of our nurses, nurse aides, physicians, physical therapists, dieticians, and more who make the care of our residents their most important priority,” said Mitchell Katz, MD, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals. “Transitioning a loved one to a long-term skilled nursing facility isn’t a decision families make lightly, and we take the responsibility of caring for these residents seriously.”
“We are honored to be recognized by U.S. News’ “Best Nursing Homes” ratings. This success is due to our staff and their commitment to provide high quality, compassionate, patient-centered care each and every day,” said Maureen McClusky, FACHE, LNHA, Senior Vice President for Post-Acute Care at NYC Health + Hospitals.
“It’s an honor to be considered to be among the best nursing homes in the country,” said Susan Sales, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur. “The recognition confirms that our staff provides our patients with the best possible care every day.”
“For the aging population in America, a nursing home should meet the specific level of care based on the needs of each patient or resident,” said Kim Castro, Editor and Chief Content Officer of U.S. News. “The U.S. News’ “Best Nursing Home” ratings hone in on measurements like emergency room visits, quality of staff and proper distribution of medical and physical therapy to help families make an informed decision. These ratings help individuals and their families begin their search for senior care and should be used in consultation with a medical professional and in-depth on-site visits.”
According to the U.S. News’ rating, NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur has a short-term rehabilitation rating of High Performing and a long term care rating of High Performing.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur has 200 long-term residents and nearly 100 rehab patients per month, ranging between 25 and 106 years old. It is co-located with NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health. It offers medical, nursing, and rehabilitative care in an atmosphere of dignity and compassion.
This year, U.S. News introduced a new rating focused on long-term care. The Long-Term Care Rating aims to provide prospective residents who need help with daily activities, and their families, with analysis and information regarding the quality of care provided by nursing homes. All measures in the ratings’ methodology were developed from publicly available data from the CMS as of August 2019.
In addition to helping families find the best nursing home for their loved one, U.S. News published an extensive guide on the questions to ask when choosing a nursing home.
