The Behavioral Health Service offers a comprehensive continuum of consultative, inpatient, ambulatory, and emergency services for people with mental health and substance abuse disorders. The information in this section is offered to help individuals, friends, and families make decisions about using our services.
These services give every patient the strength, knowledge, confidence, and hope to live a happy and productive life.
The Psychiatric Emergency Department provides timely, high quality, effective treatment in a safe and caring environment. Emergency care is provided by a multidisciplinary clinical staff in a private and confidential setting. Services include psychiatric diagnostic evaluation, crisis intervention, psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic interventions, medical assessment, discharge planning, and linkage to community resources.

NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx’s state-of-the-art inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit is the first acute inpatient psychiatry unit in the Bronx dedicated exclusively to providing specialized mental health services for the elderly.

The partial hospital program serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization for patients with acute psychiatric symptoms, and can also serve as a transition after inpatient hospitalization. Treatment is short-term and focused on resolution of the acute psychiatric crisis. Program staff coordinates treatment with families and community support networks.

The Adult Service is a psychiatric outpatient program for the needs of people age 18 and older that have psychiatric or emotional problems which get in the way of daily functioning. Our highly trained staff can evaluate your problems and make recommendations for treatment in a safe, confidential, and respectful environment.

The ACT Team provides mobile intensive treatment and support to people with psychiatric disabilities. The focus is on the improvement of an individual’s quality of life in the community and reducing the need for inpatient care, by providing intense community-based treatment services by an interdisciplinary team of mental health professionals. The mobile multi-disciplinary team is composed of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, peer counselors, addiction counselors, and rehabilitation counselors. The program offers intensive services primarily Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but provides crisis intervention 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Eligibility for admission into the ACT program is determined through a local Single Point of Access process (SPOA), which subsequently refers consumers to an ACT team based on their catchments area.
This grant-funded program specializes in reducing substance abuses and the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases among people who are HIV infected or at high risk for infection. Individual, group, and family sessions are held in the inpatient and outpatient units throughout the Behavioral Healthcare Division. Specialized groups are formed to meet the needs of patients. The clinical staff is comprised of a psychologist, social workers, and a CASAC.

The Smoking Cessation Program is designed to help individuals quit smoking. The program offers individual and group counseling, including a six-week program. Proactive telephone counseling is also available to assist you in remaining tobacco-free. Pharmacotherapy recommendations are based on your complete medical history and a comprehensive tobacco questionnaire. Social support is available as part of your treatment and is an important component in helping to secure social support in your daily life.
