NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue is a Level 1 Trauma Center and our Chief of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Lewis Goldfrank, recognized as the Father of Emergency Medicine, helped to establish an accredited residency in Emergency Medicine at Bellevue and NYU School of Medicine–the very first residency in the country. The very first hospital-based ambulance service in America started at Bellevue in 1869.
