Colon and Rectal Surgery

As Colon and Rectal Surgeons, our dual board certified and fellowship trained surgeons specialize in the treatment of patients with cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign disorders of the colon, rectum, and anus. We have expertise in sphincter preservation and minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopic surgery (small incisions in the abdomen), robotic surgery (surgeon controlled tools via small incisions in the abdomen), and transanal minimally invasive surgery (small tools in the rectum) which can lead to a better recovery. We believe that a team approach and coordinated care leads to better outcomes for patients.

Cancer Care:
Our colorectal cancer management includes cancers of the anus, appendix, colon, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), rectum and presacral lesions. Our multidisciplinary team approach includes advanced gastroenterologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and radiologists reviewing cases from each perspective. The team approach combined with thorough discussion with the patient about the best operative and nonoperative options results in a personally tailored treatment plan based on the patient’s goals. When clinically appropriate we can offer advanced organ preserving treatment plans which can preserve continence and avoid surgical removal of the colon, rectum or anus.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
Our surgical management of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD) and indeterminate colitis (IC) is done in partnership with the gastroenterology IBD subspecialists at NYC Health+Hospitals/Bellevue’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic. In addition to gastroenterology, these cases are also reviewed in a multidisciplinary manner with IBD subspecialist physicians in pathology, and radiology. If patients need surgery we can offer the most advanced minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) and traditional approaches for small bowel resection, ileocolic resection, strictureplasty, colorectal resection, bowel sparing techniques, and reconstruction with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA), also known as J pouch, to avoid a permanent ileostomy.

Benign Disease:
We treat a broad spectrum of benign anorectal disease including anal fissures, anal fistulas, perianal abscesses, pilonidal disease, and symptomatic hemorrhoidal disease. We offer sphincter preserving approaches to avoid and decrease risk of damage to anal muscles that control incontinence including botox injection and ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT).

Operations Performed:
Minimally invasive and traditional approaches for colectomy, partial colectomy, right colectomy, extended right colectomy, left colectomy, extended left colectomy, sigmoidectomy, subtotal colectomy, total colectomy, proctectomy, low anterior resection (LAR), abdominal perineal resection (APR), sphincter preserving surgery, reoperative surgery, ileocecectomy, ileal pouch anal anastomosis (J Pouch).

We offer minimally invasive approaches, which minimizes pain, incision size, hernias, scarring, length of stay and in some cases avoiding incisions entirely including:

  • Robotic
  • Laparoscopic
  • Single incision surgery
  • Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)
  • Intracorporeal anastomosis

We offer:

  • Access to Clinical Trials
  • Enhanced recovery pathways
  • Multiple modality pain control
  • Transversus abdominis plane blocks
  • Plastic Reconstruction
  • Urologic Reconstruction
  • Urologic Oncology
  • Gynecology Oncology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Psychological Support

Hernia Center

Hernias occur when there is a protrusion of fatty tissue or internal organs through a weakness or an opening of the abdominal muscles, causing a noticeable bulge on your stomach that can be painful and prevent you from performing your daily activities. Our surgeons at the NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Hernia Center have expertise in all types of hernia repair, including inguinal (groin), umbilical (belly button), ventral and incisional (due to scars from prior surgeries). We have a particular focus on optimizing your health and other medical conditions prior to surgery in order for you to obtain the best and most durable hernia repair – this includes working with patients to improve their diabetes, stop smoking, and lose weight. We are able to perform hernia repairs using either traditional open techniques with a larger incision, or using minimally invasive techniques which use smaller incisions – all of these options can be discussed during your initial consultation and individualized for each patient’s specific needs.

We offer:

  • Open or minimally invasive hernia repair surgeries using laparoscopic or robotic techniques
  • Repair of inguinal, umbilical, ventral, or incisional hernias
  • Repair of recurrent or complex hernias, using plastic surgery component separation techniques to attain a more functional abdominal wall
  • Multidisciplinary approach towards optimizing patient health prior to surgery in order to attain the best and most durable outcome – referrals to smoking cessation clinics, internal medicine, and bariatric surgery can be provided
