NEWBORN SERVICES: OUR PRIDE AND JOY

With more than 1800 deliveries a year and growing, our Newborn Services Division provides expert care by a team of highly trained neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal-trained physician’s assistants and neonatal nurses. An experienced neonatologist (MD) is present in the hospital 24 hours a day to provide expertise for any emergency.

Baby-Friendly Designation: NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens is the first hospital in Queens County designated a “Baby Friendly” hospital and one of the first hospitals in New York City to receive this designation. Hospitals with the “Baby Friendly designation are recognized for maternity facilities offering the highest levels of breastfeeding education and support and for having environments that foster and encourage maternal-infant bonding.

Safe Sleep Certified Sleep-related injuries remain one of the leading causes of death among infants in New York City, and we are working with our patients and our community to assure that all families with newborns have the information and resources they need to provide a safe environment for their babies. We have partnered with Cribs for Kids and the National Safe Sleep Certification program to achieve Bronze Level Certification and are on the journey to becoming certified in Gold. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. This is what you can do to help your baby sleep safely and to reduce your baby’s risk of SIDS. Breastfeed your baby and create a safe sleep environment. Follow the ABCs of Safe Sleep.

ALONE – Baby should sleep alone in crib; NO pillows, bumper pads, blankets or toys.
BACK – Put baby to sleep on their back.
CRIB – Put baby in a safe crib with a frim mattress and fitted sheet. Your baby should not sleep in an adult bed, on a couch or on a chair alone, with you, or with anyone else.

In addition, do not smoke during pregnancy or allow smoking around your baby. Do not let your baby get too hot during sleep. Follow health care provider guidance on your baby’s vaccines and regular health checkups. Breastfeed your baby.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Pediatric Emergency Division handles more than 20,000 visits each and is staffed around the clock with pediatricians and pediatric-trained providers. Compassionate care is provided in a child-friendly environment to our acutely ill patients.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Healthy Lifestyles Program: This is an innovative weight management program since 2003, designed to address the special needs of overweight and obese pre-teens and teens. After initial individual evaluation by the Healthy Lifestyles Multidisciplinary Team (pediatric endocrinologist, pediatric physiatrist, pediatric psychologist, pediatric dietician, pediatric social worker), patients and parents meet once weekly for 12 weeks in small groups with the dietician, psychologist and physiatrist to learn step-by-step how to make healthier lifestyle choices and overcome barriers to success. In the final week, patients “graduate” but continue to be followed periodically over the year for support. The program was recognized with a National Association of Public Hospitals Award in 2004 and has been featured on local news programs and newspapers.

Sickle Cell Comprehensive Care Program: Patients with sickle cell disease will have all their healthcare needs addressed in the clinic — routine primary care as well as care addressing their special healthcare needs, done in consultation with our pediatric hematologist.

Pediatric H.I.V. Comprehensive Care Program: A multidisciplinary team including a specially trained physician, nurse, dietician and social worker work together to address the total healthcare needs of the child and teen with H.I.V. infection. Social and developmental needs are addressed in group recreational programs and special events.

Asthma Management Program: A pediatric pulmonologist, allergist, asthma health educator and pediatric nurse practitioner work together to meet the needs of the child with asthma. Emphasis is on education, avoiding visits to the Emergency Department and preventing missed school.
